My goal with this project was to highlight three different areas of Christine's life: her artistic passion, her friends, and her internal struggles. I wanted to highlight these areas and show various sides to her personality so I could properly portray her as a complex individual. Therefore, I took photos of Christine doing three different things in three different locations. In the first group of photos she was drawing. In the second she was standing outside. And in the third she was handing out with her friends. I tried to emphasize contrast and to differentiate between the lights and the darks in the photos. Especially in the photos I took outside, I edited the photos so that Christine’s body would stand out as dark and brooding in comparison to the light backdrop.
This piece, along with the rest of my works from this semester, involved a heavy use of contrast. In my other pieces, I focused on contrast between light and dark colors (in my self-portrait and childhood to adulthood pieces) as well as the simple contrast between black and white (in honor of piece) in order to convey a deeper message. In this photography series, my goal was to clearly differentiate between lights and darks in the photos to make my subject stand out as well as to show her personaility as a darker and more pessemistic person.
Attention. Deficit. Order, an art exhibition by Reeps One, is what has most inspired me artistically and personally. Not only do I greatly appreciate his abstract style and his black and white compositions, I also connect with the message he wanted to convey through his artwork: to embrace the way your mind naturally functions and disorders like ADHD don’t define you and often, they are more than their names imply. For instance, Yeff was diagnosed with ADD when he was a child and his disorder has contributed to his creative development over the years. This has been an important message to remember in my life.
I believe I have changed from the beginning of the year because, up until now, I have always thought that my differences were weaknesses. They made me inferior to others around me. But I finally realized that my differences are what make me unique. As I wanted to do at the beginning of the year, I embraced my differences and let them incorporate themselves into my artwork. I just let my brain work the way it naturally does.
Overall, I think that I have improved a lot since the beginning of the year. I have dabbled with different art forms (photography) and I am more confident in my own abilities. And I still have a year and a half to contuning learning and growing!
