Reflection
In this piece, I decided to abandon my beloved black sharpies and used colored pencils. Apparently I was feeling happy. In reality, a few people told me that creating an abstract piece with colored pencil would look cool so I decided to give it a shot. I started with a different technique. I used the colored pencils to add value and texture. Rather than just drawing lines, I originally focused on value, aiming for a softer piece. Well, I ended up giving up and going back to harsh lines as you can see in the myriad of triangles and swirls scattered throughout my piece. But I don't think I did a good job.
I found some abstract pieces online and I thought they were really interesting. They used many contrasting colors and melded them together to create a cohesive blob of shapes and values. One of the artists in my Comparative Study (Wassily Kandinsky) used a variety of colors in his pieces. This made me want to try and use colored pencil in my pieces.
I started in the middle with the softer shading and then I moved outward, similar to how many of my other pieces progress. I decided to cut art of the page out to give the edges a flowy feel the melded with the art.
I'm not really happy with how this piece turned out. If I were to do something over, I would probably restart the entire piece on a piece of paper with more real-estate. Instead of employing harsh lines like I usually do in my ink pieces, I would have liked to explore shading with colored pencils and creating abstracts shapes with values and contrasts in colors. I also would have made it bigger. Maybe I'll try colored pencil again... maybe.
This links with my other pieces because it is abstract, however I used many colors in the piece which is unlike everything else I have done. I will not use it in my IB art show (one it doesn't fit and two I hate it with a burning passion) but I am glad I at least tried to use color. Even though it may suck, I will learn from my mistakes and try again. However, I think by using color, my pieces lost a lot of the allure they previously had with the harsh black lines and splotches of bright color here and there.
