One of the techniques that I did well on (I'm not going to say that I mastered it because, come one. I'm me. I'm not a master of anything) was shading using black, grey and white prismacolor pencils. I colored the entire controller in black and grey and then I went over with white to add value and accentuate the highlights. One of the techniques that I failed was implementing the shadow into the piece. The artist that inspired me was an artist on DeviantArt that uploads pieces under the name twilightbeta. They drew a still life multiple game controllers with colored pencils, so decided to try it out.
I'm going to be honest. This was originally supposed to be a guitar. Not this specific piece of paper, but my original still life was of my guitar. However, on one fateful Friday, ignorant Angela left her still life in the art room. Once I realized that I left my project in the art room, it was too late to go back to school and get it, so what did I do? I found a PS4 controller in my room and decided to draw it. I started by outlining it in pencil and then colored it in.
If I could do something over, I would have put in more effort to make the controller look more realistic. Towards the end (since I did it on Sunday night) I got really lazy with my technique. Here is an exact replica of my mental process during the wee hours of the morning: "Let's put some white here, some black here. You know what? Grey would look good here. Done! " I completely abandoned my reference picture towards the end, mostly because I was just done with art at that point. I was tired, bored, and my hand was aching with a pain so intense I also would have added more to the background to eliminate the excess of negative space (although I do like how the controller really stands out against the stark white backdrop).
There are two ways that this piece connects with my other pieces. First, it is a drawing and all of my pieces (except for the photography series) where drawn. Second, it represents an aspect of my personality. Many of my abstract pieces are symbolic of the inner workings of my mind; the ADHD that I have to deal with every day. My self portrait is a depiction of my search for positivity. My childhood to adulthood piece illustrates how I feel about growing up and how I'm not ready to be an adult. I mean for gods sake, I still sleep with 10 teddy bears and a nightlight. And lastly, I am a huge fan of video games. Whenever I am stressed or want to relax, I play video games. It is the one thing that I can do for hours without getting distracted.
