Project Seven
What Eye See
Sharpie on Poster Board
Reflection
For my seventh project I decided to do a large abstract piece. I FINALLY decided that my IB exhibition is going to all be abstract work with the common color scheme of red and black. Therefore, since I basically have no pieces to use and have to make a bunch (about 7 more to be exact) over spring break, I made the decision to start working on one of the pieces now. The techniques that I used really just involved the way I drew lines. I think that I am getting really good at drawing really small and really precise lines without really having to think about it. The reason I love abstract work so much is because the process of creating it is so organic. It's a natural progression of mental vomit. I don't have to do any practicing before hand, any planning, and I don't have to worry about getting proportions right, because abstract is abstract. It can be whatever I want it to be.
What I did was I started with one eye and then branched off of that. I have no other explanation.
My inspiration for this piece is the person that I am researching in my comparative study and the person I did for my "In Honor Of..." collection. His name is Reeps One. He is a beatboxer and abstract artist. His process is really what I use as inspiration - he will start out with a main idea that will evolve and sometimes completely change throughout the creation of each sketch. He calls it an “amalgamation” of many ideas in one drawing. When describing his style, he likes to use the metaphor of a sketchbook. When someone is drawing and turns the page in a sketchbook, it signals the start of a new idea; a new drawing. For Yeff, instead of turning the page, he starts other drawings within his current drawing, making the progression of his pieces very natural.
I really had no meaning in mind while drawing this piece. I like to leave abstract work up for interpretation, including my own. But I did follow a more morbid theme that i think I am going to continue with the rest of my pieces. Ms. O'Ryan said it can symbolize life and the road to death, the white corner at the top being the light at the and of the tunnel (or heaven).
If I could do something over I would have colored in the black parts better. In the corner you can see the reflection of light of the really shitty coloring marks. This is because I used three different kinds of sharpies which, as I painfully figured out, are all different colors. I mean, they're all black, but still... they're different.
The common theme with my other pieces is my mind. I struggle with ADHD and I want to portray that through my work.. Sure, I may be hyperactive and have to take pills every morning and night, but I have created some pretty cool artwork because of who I am and how my brain functions. This also relates to the other pieces that will be in my art show because it is abstract.
